Tidelines and Shorebirds on the East Coast

For nearly an hour, the flat seemed almost empty. Then the waterline retreated just enough to reveal a ribbon of feeding habitat, and the entire scene changed.
Small sandpipers stitched across the surface, larger plovers held the higher edge, and a compact tern flock worked the adjacent channel with surprising intensity.
These are the moments that make coastal birding so rewarding: not static abundance, but change, timing, and the sudden assembly of ecological opportunity.
