Early Winter Waterbirds at Alania Wetlands
A cool-season pulse of ducks, marsh harriers, and elegant feeding flocks on a restored wetland.

The first meaningful northern winds arrived this week, and with them came a noticeable lift in duck numbers across the shallow edges of Alania Wetlands.
What felt most exciting, however, was not a single rarity but the way the site began to function again as a layered wintering system: wagtails on the bunds, harriers quartering reedbeds, jacanas moving along the vegetation mats, and rafts of duck slowly consolidating toward the deeper channels.
We ended the morning discussing water levels, grazing pressure, and why apparently small changes in edge habitat can transform a site’s value for migrants.
